(In)Dependence
What can I do to rely on people more? I’ve been told from youth to learn to be independent, to manage in the real world, and get my shit together. So I did. I learned to cook meat and iron shirts and fix my own printer. I learned never to burden my parents, to be a pillar of support for my little brother. My parents told me to distrust the world and only rely on myself, and I reluctantly...

Facebook is So Creepy
FB now reads: “____ and _____ are now friends after attending __________” for certain interactions — that is so creepy. Google grabs you via platform envelopment strategy by utility and performance (speed of search, size of gmail, convenience of calendar, etc), but FB grabs you by a combination of social pressure (“How could you forget my birthday party, I invited you three...

What the heck, Jon Chu →
I understand less and less of what is supposed to be happening in the LXD every episode! Some great popping and tutting in this episode though. I could do without the western stand off pretense, it’d be a cool performance dance theme but as a TV show, it’s a bit much… (What happened to the other characters, by the way? I feel like they spent forever introducing the main...

An Obnoxious Blog Says, "It’s not what you did in...
Even though this article is provokingly titled, “Brown and Cornell are Second Tier,” the basic message of this article is both really disgusting but also soothing for the miniscule fraction of kids who go to HYP(S)(maybe Wharton) who are unnecessarily popping blood vessels right now in the stress of recruiting. I remember having similar thoughts of discontent about how shallow and...

“I said, ‘I wonder to people who can’t speak English, what does it...”
– Well Rush, I can tell you that when you speak English, it sounds like a million vuvuzelas are droning at me to jump off a cliff. Rush Limbaugh, please put yourself in a rocket and launch off towards the moon. Take Ann Coulter with you.

Happenstance!
As the Mayflower was crossing the Atlantic in 1620, passenger John Howland was swept overboard during a storm. He managed to sieze a trailing halyard and was pulled back to safety. His descendants in the New World have included: Franklin Roosevelt George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush Ralph Waldo Emerson Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Joseph Smith and Brigham Young Humphrey Bogart Benjamin...

Bah
I’ve only been back from home for a week, and already, my schedule is swarmed from 8am-2am with a blur of classes, meetings, rushes, OCR events, professor meetings, and assignments. Home was so amazing and it already feels like it was a dream. :’(

Tale of an Orphaned Boy →
My mom got slightly tipsy at a New Year’s gathering and told me about my grandfather, who passed away 12/30/98 — basically 12 years ago. I love learning about modern Chinese history, but it’s even better when told from the point of view of someone I knew and loved.
