I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

I have a dream today!

Unfortunately, I don’t take as much time as I should on most MLK days to appreciate what this day is commemorating. Today, however, I went with KDPhis to participate in the Day of Service, and for the first time, I spent a few moments remembering Dr. King’s legacy. His “I have a Dream” speech is one of the most emotional (and among my favorite) moments in American history. In elementary school, we often took time to read and reread this speech, so much that even by glancing over the words, I feel moved. Next year will be the 50th anniversary of this speech, and thinking about its impact on race relations and how much has changed within the past fifty years is very heartening. While there is much that could be improved, we’ve come a long way!
